Costa Rica Fishing: Inside Scoop On Where To Go

by Victor Krumm on November 29, 2009

You know the maxim: The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work. Are you an avid fisherman (or woman) a bit tired of being confined to local lakes and rivers? Think about winter fishing. Bundling up, chopping a hole in the ice or boating in blue, tropical waters. Hard choice? Not!!! Trade in your Chapstick and runny nose for suntan lotion, shorts and a flowered shirt, get your ticket to Costa Rica and enjoy fishing like you have never thought possible. Costa Rica fishing is exactly what you need to get through winter.

Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Six hours of fishing for three-and-a-half minutes of fun. Now, consider catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the awesome marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!

A great place for a Costa Rica fishing vacation is its North Pacific coast. This area is called the “Gold Coast” because of its amenities and is easilyconveniently reached. There is a new international airport at Liberia, Costa Rica, just minutes from the North Pacific Coast and your adventure. You will find the fishing centers of Flamingo and Tamarindo with miles of great beaches and lots of Costa Rica attractions. If you are looking for sailfish, travel to this coast between May and August for the best fishing, though these fish are here year-round. From August to October, you might come into large schools of different tuna species with some weighing up to 400 pounds and many exceeding 60 pounds. Many anglers fish the shoreline-dwelling roosterfish here November to March not far from the Bay of Papagayo. You also have a good chance of catching large marlin, wahoo, and brightly colored dorado fish.

Billfish are a popular quarry for those angling in Costa Rica and the Central Pacific coast offers them in abundance. Fish the waters off Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina from December to April to catch sails or marlin. Between May though October many folks catch a vibrant dorado while trolling offshore. Tuna, wahoo, snapper, roosters, and snook are also available along these shores and are found closer in. You will not be disappointed fishing here!

For many, Costa Rica fishing paradise is found along the southern Pacific Coast near the incomparable Osa Peninsula down to Panama. When when the water is warm, big marlin and sailfish are frequent visitors. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is reported by many to offer the finest inland fishing in Costa Rica. This is because it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide. Hook a barracuda, grouper, or delicious sea bass here as well as other inland species. And, at times, you will have hundreds of porpoises around your boat as they follow the bait fish.

On the Atlantic coast, you will find the world-famous Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado fishing centers up to the Nicaragua border. The seas here can be very choppy but on a day where the waters are flat, this is a deep sea angler’s dream spot! From/Between May to November, the valuable tarpon fish is bountiful here, and they can attain weights of to 150 pounds. If you are very lucky, you might hook. This is also a good area for really big. Jack Crevalle, guapote, giant grouper, and tripletail can also be fished here. And, do not forget to visit the world famous green sea turtle nesting beaches at Tortuguero.

If you want to get out of the office, a Costa Rica fishing trip may be just what will put your soul at rest! There are many Costa Rica vacation packages available online for sportfishing. With dozens of fishing world fishing records to its credit, Costa Rica is said to have the best deep sea fishing in the world. See for yourself. Pura Vida!!!
