Have You Considered Installing A Copper Sink In Your Bathroom

by Jill on April 26, 2009

Many times we get used to always seeing the same appliances and decorations for our home renovation projects and we just pass by other options that can give our home an original new look. In fact we usually think that art pieces are made for the museum and galleries and not for our homes.

But nowadays many people have been discovering that art can also live inside their houses and bring life to places they wouldn’t think could have some intention for art in their spaces. I’m talking about the world famous mexican copper sinks.

These are beautiful pieces of folk art designed and fabricated by Mexican artisans in their small shops situated in the beautiful town of Santa Clara del Cobre in the state of Michoacan, a small town situated in the western mountains of the charming mexican province.

These mexican hammered copper sinks are not fabricated following the usual procedures of other commercial sinks that you you may buy at any home appliances store, like those made of steel or other metalic materials. They are rather special pieces, they are all made of just one piece of a previously cut copper plate that is hammered and heated patiently in a wood fire until the desired sink shape is obtained and a brand new piece of copper artisan art is ready to be sent out of the shop to the world market. But there is one more process that has to be applied to the copper sinks prior to its exhibition and sale to the public.

This special process applied to the surface of the mexican copper sinks is a chemical process called “patination” and it’s applied under heat to the surface of the sink in a manner that the surface of the piece will become protected against the elements and will acquire the particular color desired by the artisan. This is not a procedure that could be like painting the surface of the copper sink but a process that makes the sink that color you are seeing from the inside of the copper piece.

Many people may think that copper sinks are soft or fragile pieces and that you must be extremely careful when using them in your everyday life, but that’s not really true in any way. A copper sink won’t let you down, it won’t bend easily. They are sturdy enough to substitute a regular, series made, commercial stainless steel sink. The copper plates used are sturdy enough that even large bathtubs are fabricated entirely using copper plates. And thanks to the “patination” process mentioned above they won’t acquire a greenish color or get rusty with time and regular use in the bathroom. So you will have a copper sink for many years to come at home without you having to worry all day if something bad can happen to the sink.

There is no doubt that these mexican copper sinks are a beautiful addition to any home’s kitchen or bathroom. You will find the original Mexican sinks and also you will be able to chose a beautiful sink model at Adobes Market, a portal maintained by a group of mexican artisans of Santa Clara del Cobre.
