It is a common misconception that iguanas, being naturally hardy animals, do not require much care and attention when you own one as a pet. But the iguana, when kept in captivity, require very specialised care that has to be followed strictly.

With the advent of the internet there is so much information available regarding iguana care that ignorance cannot be excused or even understood.

Stay away from bad informations that you might get from shop owners and other people who seem to know about it but doesnt.

To do proper research on the subject of caring for your pet iguana you will find many great web sites written by owners that have years of experience in caring for iguanas of their own as well as many great books that provide hundreds of pages of in depth guidance. Nothing is left uncovered.

Try to make your iguana feel familiar with its surrounding for the first two weeks. Let it get used to the sights, sounds and smells of its new home and keep an eye on its mood any changes to its physical appearance.

Handling your iguana while in its new environment can make it very anxious and unhappy so please try to refrain from picking up your iguana for the first week so that it can become more comfortable being around you.

It cannot be understated how important it is to locate a good quality vet who is experienced in dealing with exotic animals such as iguana. It is best to find one early on so that you are fully prepared should your iguana become sick.

The food you provide your iguana is, as you might expect, vital to its overall health. Some pet stores sell bagged food made for exotic pets but it is recommended that you provide good quality fresh food instead.

One basic rule is that Iguana Lizards are stringently herbivores, though many books recommend insects to be fed to iguanas some are still against this notion and firmly believes that feeding your iguana lizards green and leafy herbs is still the best diet.

Eventually the most important thing is to provide them with fresh food and water. And they should be fed regularly everyday the number of times is not that important as long as it is fed everyday and fed enough to be healthy.

The habitat of your iguana is also a major factor in your proper care regimen. You should have a large place for your iguana lizard, as time goes by your pet will grow bigger almost four times bigger the size when you first bought it.

Make sure to clean out the iguana cage every day to keep your iguana healthy. Although the enclosure may look clean, parasites can bread in there that will cause your iguana to become very ill if left unattended.

Do not succumb to the misconception that iguanas are easy to care for. They require time and effort and also money. The initial outlay to provide all the necessary bits and pieces can be quite expensive so be prepared take a financial hit when you first buy an iguana.
