First of all, are they for you? Would you be better off with a modular sofa even if there is sufficient space in your home for the traditional type of sofa?
Modular sofas are extremely versatile and a great way to make use of awkward spaces. They come in different numbers of modules for smaller or larger rooms, and in different configurations to fit different shaped rooms.
Modular sofas can look especially good in a large room where they can make a bold statement whilst a traditional sofa would look rather diminutive. They can be used to define areas within a large living space and thus give a cosier feel to a really large open plan home.
Large modular sofas may not be so suitable as such for smaller Victorian London apartments or small homes with restricted room. It is possible, though even here to use modular types of sofa units with smaller numbers of units and in fact, their versatility in configuration means they can sometimes be placed where a traditional sofa simply would not fit.
You should consider a modular type of sofa if you need the maximum seating as they are often able to accommodate more than a traditional sofa.
Modular sofas come in a range of sizes from small to large, and in differing numbers of units that make up them. This makes it easier to choose the right type for your needs. Small sofas are interesting as they can be a comfy chair for one person or ideal for a couple to cuddle in. Bear in mind the arms of a sofa can make a good deal of difference in respect of how many people can comfortably sit on it.
A word of caution though. Modern, chic, low-backed styles can look great, especially in a low-ceilinged room but they may not give good back support and therefore not be comfortable for some. You need to try before you buy.
Another thing worth remembering is that the shape and size of the arms of the sofa can affect how large the furniture looks. Narrow arms make the entire sofa look smaller, whilst big or overstuffed ones will do the opposite.. Therefore, it is possible to get a larger-than-normal sofa to look good in a smaller room by choosing a narrow armed version. In a big room, a sofa with large arms will look more luxurious and impressive.
If you don’t have a long enough wall or space for an adequately large sofa consider instead a modular corner sofa. These usually sit along two walls with a section that allows it to turn the corner rather than be broken into two separate sections. This can give a nice integrated and grand appearance in a large enough room, whilst giving a lot of seating space. If your room is smaller, a similar effect can be achieved by using smaller units and/or less of the individual units.
An alternative option to consider if you are short of space or need an extra bed is a sofa bed. These pieces of furniture are remarkably versatile, looking as they do like a sofa for most of the time, but easily converting to a bed when required You get a dual purpose by this means.
It is worth thinking about how you use your room when thinking about seating. If you wish to change the arrangement around sometimes, or be more flexible, then you may wish to have a sofa and chairs rather than a fixed unit.. It is sometimes possible, depending on your modules and the shape of your room, to reconfigure a modular sofa to give a different appearance.
Hopefully, by keeping all the above in mind and looking at all the options, you can make the right choice of modular sofa for your home.
