With a fabric covered sofa you would need to vacuum or wash the coverings in order to get them clean because dirt and grime will work its way into the fabric much more easily than it will into the leather.
One prime illustration of the difference in care of a fabric covered sofa versus a leather covered sofa is the case of the spilled drink. If someone spills a drink on your fabric covered sofa you are in for a bit of work. First you must find dry towels or rags to soak as much of the liquid as you can out of the fabric. You will probably need to spray some sort of cleaner onto the fabric and work it into the fabric and yet try to not rub so vigorously as to damage the fabric. Once you have removed and cleaned what you can, you must then wait for several hours while the spot dries, all the while hoping that a stain does not develop.
On the other hand if the sofa were covered in leather, the drink would by and large run off the surface of the leather. You would then wipe off the left over liquid, use a bit of leather cleaner, and in minutes you have a clean, dry, useful seat again. This is just one tiny example of the difference.
